Basic, simple, sleep. Its the same diameter as a 2 liter bottle. Has an adapter that plugs in any standard wall type outlet. The adapter then provides the USB port for the LectroFan's USB cord. Or plug it into any other USB outlet. The cord is about 5 feet long, plenty for most situations.

I found the 7 sided geometric design has an advantage many other sound therapy machines don't, you can set it on its side! The advantage then is you can POINT THE SOUND in the direction that best suits you! I found that pointing it away from me makes it a little softer (less harsh) of a sound, almost like fine tuning the volume between the 10 settings. It also allowed me to create a more effective barrier between myself and any other sounds. Yes, it could be knocked over from being on its side, but it would take more than just a bump to do it. The sides are flat and about 2 inches square. To me its stable enough that I'm comfortable reaching for it in the dark to adjust where its pointing and/or using all of the buttons to change sounds, volume, etc.

As for the buttons and features, no frills is definitely the way to go for me. Other manufacturers do a wonderful job of marketing and romancing people with rain, waterfalls, meadows, ocean waves and more. However many of these things can actually be more of a distraction versus the steady unbroken sounds of a fan or white noise. In fact the consistent, unbroken sound seems to be another coveted feature of this machine. I have not heard anything other than the sound I set it for, continuously until I shut it off.

The top half of the left button turns the machine on & off. It will play continuously unless you press the bottom half of the left button, which sets a timer (60 minutes stackable per press). The right side button is for volume, up & down. The left half of the bottom button plays the fan sounds, the right half the white noise sounds. Each time you press the same side/half of the bottom button (FAN / WHITE NOISE), it will change how that feature sounds.

The WHITE NOISE sounds like someone telling you to "shhh", be quiet. It starts low, sounding similar to a slow "shhh" sound. Each press produces a higher pitched "shhh" sounding more and more as it does when you force air quickly from your lungs while making the "shhh" sound. The significant point to make here is that unlike when you say "shhh" with a fast exhale, the LectroFan doesn't get louder (unless you turn up the volume).

The FAN sounds are not just changing pitch, but actually sound like different types of fans. This can be a huge advantage over other machines! So if you grew up with a certain type of fan, or lived somewhere with a certain type of fan, there's a very good chance you'll find one of the ten fan sounds will be the same or very similar. I was quite surprised as to just how different and also how accurate LectroFan reproduces the sound of different fans. Plus, for me at least, when I put it on its side I could make the reproduced fan sound even more accurate when near a wall or large object. The sound then reflects off the wall adding a reverb or echoing effect.

A final note is just to again stress that the number of features and romantic sounds produced by other sound therapy machines may be more clever marketing gimmicks rather than being truly useful. I think for most (not all) people fan noise and white noise are both neutral and less distracting. I feel the fan sounds are very accurate, and having 10 settings for both fan and white noise allows the user to fine tune the sound for a more personal sleep experience. The unit is small, well built, and simple to set up and use. I highly recommend this item and can truthfully say its money WELL spent!

P.S. Mine came in a small cardboard box with a hinge to open on one side. There are form fitting cutouts that hold the machine and adapter inside. To me its perfect for travel and better than the soft travel case you can buy for it, since the box protects it too. Its not much bigger than the unit itself either. Just thought I'd mention it in case you want to save a few bucks.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot Quite What I Expected After Reading Reviews
Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2020
I read a ton of very enthusiastic reviews for this white noise machine. I still was not quite convinced to buy it given the high price. Finally, I saw it go on sale, and as I was just about to order yet another bottle of foam earplugs anyway, I decided to give this machine a chance instead. I am tired of the earplugs. They do not help much, and they tend to pop out once you put them in and they expand. Then, you start jamming them in as hard as you can to keep them in your ears, and you end up hurting your ears. If this machine would work without that aggravation, it would be worth it.

The unit arrived this afternoon. I immediately plugged it in and listened to all of the fan sounds and the white noise sounds. I used the volume key to see out loud it would go. Listen kids, "loud" is a very relative word. I do not find this to be especially loud except at some of the more high pitched white noise sounds. They are so obnoxious that I cannot imagine using them. They would keep me awake instead of helping me to sleep.

I will not have a chance to test this unit until tonight once I retire for the evening, but I have a terrible feeling this is NOT going to work for my purposes/ I bought this to drown out my neighbour's three little yapping dogs as well as my own dog who does not bark but "huffs" very loudly if he is bored during the night. He sleeps in the other room, but our home is quite small---roughly 740 sq ft, so he is not that far away from my bedroom at all even though he is in the other room. With my earplugs in it sounds almost as if he is in the same room with me. I do not think this machine is going to change that.

People say this unit is loud, and whilst I can agree it is "loud" compared to a lot of other things, it is not as loud as one would have thought. I already feel disappointed. I will edit this review after I have given it an overnight test. I truly hope I am wrong because I need to get better sleep, and so far, earplugs have not worked, and I am at my wit's end.

This machine looks reasonably well made. It is compact which is good because there is never enough table or shelf space around here. Now, whether or not it works is another issue altogether. Loud, you say? Compared to what?? The speaker on my MacBook Air is not very loud, but compared to the speaker in this machine, the speaker in my laptop is loud. Really, reviewers should say "loud compared to ________."

I will edit this review as soon as I am able to give this unit an overnight trial. I am trying to be hopeful.

ETA: Okay, I have used this unit for a few nights. It does help to drown out smaller, fairly far away street noises. It does NOT drown out my dog's huffs, grunts, and whines in the other room. It helps a tiny bit with the noise he makes, but it is not loud enough to drown him out. Also, I noticed something weird. If he huffs whilst this unit is running, now I not only hear him, but I also feel a vibration that runs through the floor. I do not not why this happens. Perhaps I dream it? It is really difficult to say.

I am not sure whether or not I will keep this unit. I have been using foam earplugs for a very long time now, and they hurt my ears. Even though I have not used them in a few nights now, my ears are still sore. I really do not want to go back to the foam earplugs. I love my dog, and I feel an huge obligation to him because he is bonded to me and loves his home, and I know I would miss him terribly if he were not here, but adopting him out has occurred to me. If I lived in a much larger home, and if he slept in a room much farther away, this unit would probably drown out his noises. I do not know what else I can do. I do not want to go back to foam earplugs for sure. :(

I did purchase the LectroFan White Noise Machine for my wife, whom has difficulty sleeping due to tinnitus in one ear. This machine has provided her the sleep she requires, by blocking out the ringing in her ear. This was a great purchase. It is small enough for travel, and provides a very loud white noise and fan noise. Great product, really did the job! My wife thanks you!!!

Bought two of these for my apartment. I have them on all day to dampen the noise from the outside. It helps keep my dog from barking when people pass by. It works really well, has a variety of sounds, volume control works well, doesn’t heat up, and it fits well into smaller places. Would buy more if I had a bigger place.

5.0 out of 5 stars City life in an apartment and sleeping like a baby

I live in the city and it has a lot of noise from cars driving by, cars idling showing off their cheap stereo system, helicopters, and even neighbors with their TV volume up so loud I'm basically watching the show with them. A bunch of careless and inconsiderate people but thats the city, right?

I have been having a hard time sleeping due to these incidences and would usually resort to turning on a fan at high speed to drown out the sound. Not only does this make the room colder but also drains a lot of electricity. I knew I needed an alternative and remembered seeing a white noise device at a hotel I stayed at last year.

I turned to Amazon and saw that this product had stellar reviews. They were legit. A USB powered white noise machine that is efficient at power consumption. It can be plugged in with the included power brick or to any USB power supplied connection. Very travel friendly.

The first night I turned this on I slept immediately. It drowned out all the peripheral sounds and I didn't notice them at all.

I have had the product for some time and but only use the default white noise. It is sufficient for me. But there are many different sounds to choose from. There are 10 unique fan sounds. The white noise however all sound the same but at different pitches. While going through the different sounds there will be a distinct sound to notify you that you are looping back to the first sound again. The volume can also be adjusted very loud if you need to.

What I did notice however is that it will power on whenever power is initially supplied to it. I noticed this when I went on a two week trip. I was notified by the power company that there was a power outage while I was away from home. When I came home two weeks later it was running. This means that once power was restored, it turned on. Not a big deal but just be mindful to unplug it when not in use or if going on an extended trip.

Pros:
Case feels solid
10 fan and 10 white noise sounds
Volume has a wide range
60 minute timer
Distinct sound when looping
Powered by USB

Cons:
Powers on automatically
White noise sounds are all similar, just at higher pitches

5.0 out of 5 stars The first sleep machine I actually like!
Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2022
Style: Classic-BlackColor: BlackProduct Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified Purchase
I am a super light sleeper and can hear everything so even very low sounds wake me up. Someone opening a door as gently as possible, whispering, someone opening some kind of packaging, even someone walking down hall on concrete floors with no shoes. I’ve tried other sleep machines and I eventually just turn off because they don’t help me sleep but keep me awake or wake me up whenever the sound loops. I even have an air purifier in my room that has pink noise, yeah it’s a thing, to help you sleep. My air purifier doesn’t bother me but it doesn’t help my sleep either.

This sound machine I actually like. I’ve even tried nature sounds, white noise, on my phone and as soon as the sound cuts off or loops, I wake up. I actually thought sleep machines and sounds were just not for me until this summer when our room was super hot and purchased an oscillating fan. I was sleeping more and deeper with the fan but it was getting too cold to have it on so I decided to reevaluate sound machines.

The sound quality is not horrible like other sound machines I’ve tried. It’s actually pretty great. It’s the closest I’ve found to the sound of a real fan. Sometimes I forget to turn it off when I get up because it sounds very real like. There is 0 looping meaning there is no break in the sound. It's a continuous sound until you turn off but it dies have a timer if you prefer. The looping out breaks would wake me up if they actually got me to sleep. Other sound machines sound are like nails on a chalkboard to me so was a little hesitant to purchase this one.

There is a good variety of sounds to pick from. I prefer to turn the sound all the way up so the way you just to drown out any noises. The trash truck in the morning, they come at like 4-5am was washing me up and now I sleep through it. My dog has barked and not woke up when I have the sound machine on. My husband comes home and takes naps after work. he was stirring from sound so I started turning it on. He also loves.

It isn’t fancy looking or modern so I wouldn’t say it’s visually appealing. They out more tight into the sound quality than the actual design. It’s not the worst thing in the world but I wouldn’t say it’s pretty. It’s not huge. I would say it’s roughly the size of a hockey puck but taller. It would be easy to stick in a travel bag or even in my purse. It would be nice if it had option to take batteries for camping lol.

This is seriously the first sound machine I have ever liked. I sleep so much better, deeper, with this sound machine. This is saying something as I am also in recovery from toxic mold exposure that has caused TBI like symptoms so getting sleep can be tough at times. Highly highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great quality little machine, but didn't work for me
Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2023
Style: Classic-BlackColor: BlackProduct Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified Purchase
Overall this is a great quality little machine. The fit and finish and controls are all very nice. There is a wide range of sounds to choose from.

When choosing something like this to hide ambient noise, you can look at things like a specific white noise generator, fans or air purifiers, or playing sound through speaker setups. They each have pros/cons. After trying all 3, the speaker setup was the only one that worked for me.

I was purchasing this to block out some distant subwoofers in my neighborhood. The bass is very low and not very loud. This white noise machine did not effectively block them out, I believe because the bass was lower than the white noise from the machine was capable of generating. I then tried a few different fans and air purifiers, and these had the same problem.

So here's what I did instead. I got a cheap stereo setup in my bedroom with a receiver and bookshelf speakers, and I play a track I found called "smoothed brown noise" on it. Initially, even this did not work, because my bookshelf speakers did not go deep enough to cover the bass either. But then I added a cheap subwoofer, and bingo! Even at a very low volume, it now effectively drowns out all noise that I was hearing before. I am loving this setup. You can find cheap used receiver/speakers/subwoofer setups for very affordable prices if you're not looking for anything fancy, not much more than the cost of this white noise machine if you're not picky. And the bonus is you can also use it for music. Another option is to use a smart speaker, possibly with added subwoofer if you need to block a low frequency sound.

I think the trade-offs of these different options are: if the noise you're trying to hide is not very loud and not super low frequency, then the white noise machine is great. This is also the best option if you need to travel or don't have a lot of space. The fan/air purifier provides a better blanket of sound that sounds a little more natural and might be slightly better than the white noise machine for certain types of sound, but it takes up more space, can be more expensive, less portable, and maybe you don't want a fan or air purifier. Some sort of speaker setup with subwoofer is the best quality sound and blocks the most types of ambient noise the best, but may end up costing more and requires more space, depending on what speaker setup you choose.

5.0 out of 5 stars I slept for 11 hours

I bought this for my wife, who has tinnitus, upon a recommendation from her ear doctor and Eva Mendes (not personally but in an article I read) who apparently has one. She wouldn't listen to the ear doctor because he's a man and we are all stupid, but I thought maybe she would listen to a celebrity. Naturally, since "I" bought it, and it wasn't "her" decision, she looked at it like I bought her a mop, but since I included flowers with the gift, she begrudgingly gave it a shot last night. Again, since I, her husband of 21 years purchased it, it never had a chance of getting her seal of approval, but I slept for 11 hours last night. I haven't slept for 11 straight hours in over 20 years. I feel so freaking good this morning I may clean the garage or paint something. I might even fix the flapper valve on the toilet. Hell, I might vacuum. This thing is compact, can travel with it easily, and puts out a "non looped" sound which is key. The last time I bought one of these was years ago when they were looped and you could detect the beginning and end of the looped track and that was distracting. The sounds on this machine are seamless. Would recommend. I only wish Oprah or Eva Mendes told my wife personally about it, because she would then recommend it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anxiety from neighbor noise pollution? This is the cure.
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2018
Style: Classic-BlackColor: BlackProduct Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified Purchase
There is nothing I can tell any of you that the other reviews don't say. Instead, I'll offer my personal anecdote.

This device saved. My. Life. Well, not literally, but it definitely saved my sanity. I'm a highly anxious person who is extremely noise sensitive and vulnerable to sensory overload. Cue moving into my first college apartment, where the upstairs neighbors' every footstep can be heard amplified and bass boosted through my ceiling. (Of course, before I signed the lease, the landlord didn't mention this... "feature".) My room is right below their kitchen, so in addition to the stomping, I can hear all their yelling and banging around pots and pans all hours of the day and into the night. I was losing a LOT of sleep over this, and it ramped up my anxiety tenfold. I felt like I couldn't be at peace in my own home and dreaded having to come back here at all... My safe, comfortable space was constantly being violated by noise pollution and there was literally nothing I could do about it. As bitter as I was, my upstairs neighbors weren't technically doing anything wrong, they were living their lives just like I am.

Anyway, I almost considered moving out or at least switching to an upstairs unit... that is, until I happened upon this amazing little device. I never cared for "white noise" machines that wasn't true white noise; ocean waves and rainfall isn't as soothing when you have upstairs neighbors with lead for feet. You really need a good, loud, pure white noise that masks all frequencies and that your brain can easily ignore, so it seems as if there's no noise at all. This thing was absolutely perfect for me, as it only had white noise and fan sounds (and a variety of 'em!) that can get loud enough to mask anything. I mean ANYTHING. I can now peacefully snooze through not only my neighbors' stomping kitchen antics, but also the 8AM garbage truck arriving bright and early every Wednesday. I don't wake up in the middle of the night anymore because my neighbor wants a midnight snack. I can come home after classes and enjoy an afternoon nap without disturbances. I sleep much more deeply and peacefully overall. And it's all thanks to the LectroFan.

I'm telling you, if you can relate to my situation in the slightest, just don't even worry about the cost. I would honestly pay double for this if I knew how much it would improve my quality of life. Please buy this. Please. Support this awesome product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing sounds, wonderful for CPAP users

As a CPAP user with sleep apnea, this is amazing! While my CPAP machine is super quiet, I'm also a restless sleeper and have difficulty falling asleep at first. So any changes in sound as I breathe in and out while I lay in bed will keep me up longer than necessary. This noise machine covers any changes in sound, and gives me a clean slate of sound to fall asleep if that makes sense. It's also incredibly soothing. I keep it on the low-pitched brown/chestnut setting. 5 stars! Wonderful product.

It just works. There are enough sound options you should be able to find something you like. Many times it is just a matter of volume to make something sound just right. We used to use a fan in the room which I am sure took up electric and made it cold in the summer time. It also helps with our 1 year old Westie who seems to think he is a guard dog and any sound he hears he is obliged to bark at. We turn it on at bedtime, turn it off when we get up. And takes up a lot less space than a fan. What's not to like??
