Dell has another promotion where you can get a free $50 gift card when buying a $300 gift card. You can try to order two or three of these, then applying them all to this XPS 8500 PC. There is a risk, however, because as that page says, "delivery may take up to 24 hours." You should receive your gift cards via email within a couple hours, but since this XPS 8500 deal expires tonight, so you may be out of luck if your gift cards do not arrive by today.

Next step would be to call Dell and order this computer over the phone. Their website will only accept two forms of payment (one gift card and one credit card in a single order), so if you want to apply multiple gift cards, you have to phone it in.

Beware Dell's phone order may only accept two of the $300 gift cards and two of the free $50 cards that come with them (totaling $700 in gift cards), plus your credit card to cover the rest. You can try three $300 gift cards with three $50 cards, but it may not work and you may be stuck with a $350 gift card that you cannot use with this order.

After purchasing this computer, you will also get a free $150 gift card to use at a later date on Dell.com.

After everything, say you were able to apply two $300 gift cards with two $50 cards, you would end up paying $900 for this computer and get a free $150 gift card for later use.

If you were to build a computer from parts with similar specs, you would probably spend more than $1000. The CPU alone goes for $320, the monitor for $310, 1TB hard drive around $70, Windows 7 for $100, motherboard around $100, case with power supply around $100. Right there it adds up to costing $1000 to build this computer yourself.

The i7-3770 CPU is the first consumer CPU that to exceed a benchmark score of 10,000, which is about 15% faster than an i7-2600. Even though the release of this new i7-3770 CPU should help push the price of the i7-2600 down a little bit, it should still be hard to find a complete PC system for $900 with a i7-2600 or i7-3770 over the next two months. So this Dell XPS 8500 is a great deal, but a little risky since the gift cards need to arrive today to get this deal.

Beware this TV's display dimensions are 16:10, not the standard 16:9 that most HDTVs are. This is not so good for viewing HDTV signals, since some may stretch the full height of the monitor, so some shows may appear a little stretched vertically. This non-standard aspect ratio is actually very nice for use as a computer monitor, where you can get a nice 16:9 display plus the little extra height is perfect space for the taskbar at the bottom of your desktop display. If your computer has DVI output instead of HDMI, use a DVI-to-HDMI cable (not included) or a DVI/HDMI adapter to connect to this monitor.

As a computer monitor, $200 looks like a great deal for a 28-inch monitor with built-in speakers, VGA & HDMI input, and 3ms response time. Other similar monitors cost more. As an HDTV, this deal looks pretty good, but the non-standard aspect ratio may be annoying.

Hannspree is the same company as Hanns-G which makes a lot of computer monitors, most with good reviews.

This is a great deal if you have a lot of computers in an office, networking all the rooms in a big house, or building a datacenter. Typically a 24-port gigabit network switch that is rackmountable would normally go for at least $150, today this Zyxel Switch is on sale for $85. Unlike most rackmountable network gear, this one has no fans which means it could run a little warm, but its silent operation makes it more in-home friendly. From someone who once had a switch fail after its fan died, while having built-in fans keep it cool, having one without moving parts may not really be a bad thing even for a datacenter operation.

It's not hard to find networking gear this cheap (lots of sellers on Ebay are selling 24-port gigabit switches for $25 to $100), but those are in used condition. We realize most of our viewers will not have any need for a networking equipment like this, but for those heavy into networking and technology, this really looks like a great deal worth checking out.

For some help in understanding the difference between a Hard Drive and a Solid State Drive, we wrote a quick comparison chart in a post back in September, 2010. That post is over a year old, the technology has improved a little and the prices have dropped by a lot, but most of the fundamentals still apply. Some SSD models were mentioned in that article, we recommend sticking with a newer SSD that uses newer technology, such as one of the SSDs listed above. If you're looking for our opinion on an SSD, it's tough to tell which of the above will work best for you. If performance and reliability are more important than price, look at a Samsung 830-Series. If reliability is more important than anything, look at an Intel.

If you plan on installing inside a desktop computer, check the products details for a 2.5-to-3.5-inch adapter. If the SSD does not include one, you may have to go out and buy one for around $10.
