Details:.com domain names $7
(expired)

This new promotion provides new and transfer of .com domain names for $7 per year. Discount applies automatically in your cart when you use the above link. This is a good deal for someone looking to register a new domain name, or looking to transfer a domain name to an inexpensive & reliable registrar. I use Godaddy for several of the domain names I own, and I could not be happier with them. While they are known as a "budget" registrar, they have a good interface for domain name & DNS management, and good 24/7 telephone technical support. The only negative thing about Godaddy is during a purchase process, you are inundated with advertisements.

This deal expires on Thursday evening or Friday morning.

A few tips about domain names. The best way to ensure you have an email address for life is to get your own personal domain name. Bigfoot started out a long time ago by giving away free email addresses to everyone "for life", but people got tired of their interface. Email.com came along, but had its own problems too. Yahoo mail is nice, but GMail is starting to gain in popularity because of its good features and interface. But some people use Earthlink email with their ISP account, but they cancel that for a cablemodem. No matter what you do, you will likely want to change your email address or email service sometime in the future, which can be a hassle to notify all your friends & family of a change in email address. The best way to keep your email address constant forever is to get your own domain name, such as jon@smith.com. You can use an email forwarding service to forward jon@smith.com email to a place where you read your email, such as Yahoo. If you want to change your email settings to forward your mail onto GMail, you can do that without changing your email address identity since jon@smith.com will remain the same. Godaddy has email forwarding service available for $3 per year.

Another tip about the "privacy" service available on domain names. Privacy is a good way to protect the name, phone, and address of the domain name owner, and can help stop spam email. By default all domain name information can be looked up by anyone who requests it, so anyone can find the domain name owner. Privacy can be a good service for some people to keep the domain name owner's identity secret, however if you ever plan on using the domain name for commercial activities, I suggest not purchasing Privacy service on your domains. Anyone who does commercial activities will want people to find them. Every online commercial entity (Amazon.com, CircuitCity.com, Buy.com, Ebay.com, Microsoft.com, etc.) all keep their domain name information public because they want buyers and customers to locate them to encourage business. You won't see IBM trying to sell computers and consulting services while hiding their address and phone number. If you set up an online store, do not make your domain name information private, or some people may think you have secrets to hide, and legitimate businesses don't want to appear as hiding their contact info. Scam artists have been known to buy a domain name (sometimes a domain name that resembles the name of a legitimate company), add Privacy service to keep the owner's true identity a secret, then build a phony website to collect people's credit card numbers and perform illegal identity theft. If you find a company online that appears to sell products at prices that seem too good to be true, check the domain name contact record (whois record), if the online merchant has the words "private" or "proxy" listed in the domain name's contact info, it could be an indication they are a scam.

Update: Some comments about the Godaddy email service, and why they can actually prevent you from receiving legitimate email.
